What you need to know
Nicola Valiji’s easy cowl pattern is the ideal first project for beginner knitters.
When you’re cocooned in your snuggliest coat, sometimes there’s just no room for a scarf. That’s where cowls come in and we adore this textured number. It uses just knit and purl stitches and the four-row pattern repeat is so easy to remember. There’s no shaping at all and as it’s knitted on big needles, so it’ll be soon be ready to wear!
What do I need?
Yarn: Deramores Studio Chunky, shade Mustard, four 100g balls
Needles: 6.5mm
Buttons: large, three
Tapestry needle
Sizing
120cm long (before making up) x 33cm wide
Top knit tips
This yarn comes in a variety of colours so you could pick a colour to match your coat. The cowl could also be knitted into a longer length if required.
Keep your final edge nice and stretchy by casting off in the rib pattern. To do this, knit the first two stitches and cast off as normal. Next, move the yarn to the front of the work between the needles and purl the next stitch. Insert the left needle into the second stitch on the right needle and cast off another stitch. Purl the next stitch on the left needle and cast off one more. Continue along the row, alternating two knit and two purl stitches, casting off at the same time.
