What you need to know

Download Nicola Valiji’s polar bear cushion knitting pattern, and learn how to work with eyelash yarn.

With her charming ears, there to listen, and restful eyes, ready to snooze, this polar bear knitting pattern is a wonderful treat for your living room or bedroom this winter. Featuring irresistibly fluffy yarn, our polar bear pillow is perfect for a warm, welcoming cuddle on chillier evenings. The cushion itself is knitted entirely in simple stocking stitch, making this project a nice and easy one to work on when you don’t fancy anything complicated – and it’s a great pattern to start with if you’re not used to working with eyelash yarns!

Top knit tips

Place a small amount of toy stuffing behind the polar bear’s snout to give it more of a 3D effect.

The overall look of this design will be largely dictated by the facial features. Embroidering on knitted fabric is similar to embroidering on woven fabrics, but you won’t use an embroidery hoop since this can distort knitted pieces. You should always use a blunt tapestry needle as this will help to avoid piercing through strands of yarn and splitting them – rather you should aim to feed your needle through gaps between yarn strands. Also, avoid pulling your stitches too tight as this can lead to your knitted fabric bunching up and not lying flat anymore.
