What you need to know
Nicky Fijalkowska’s knitting pattern teaches you how to make a fuzzy loop stitch sheep that makes the perfect gift for kids.
We’re so in love with this sheep toy pattern! Named Mervin, his head is worked in standard stocking stitch and his textured fleece is created using an effective loop stitch. If you haven’t tried out the latter technique before, we've got advice to help you in the download pack. You should also pay close attention to the placing of Merv’s features, as you’ll want to get them as close to the image as possible.

Top knit tip
Firstly, insert your right-hand needle knitwise into the stitch where you want to create a loop. Wrap the yarn as if you were creating a knit stitch and then bring the right-hand needle to the front of your work. Bring your yarn to the front of your work, around the back of the right hand needle, between the two needle tips. Wrap the yarn around your thumb to create a loop and then bring the yarn back between the two needles as before. While holding the loop taut with your thumb, knit into the same stitch again. You will now have created a loop, and two new stitches on your right-hand needle. Use your left- hand needle to slip the right hand one of these stitches over the left one, as if you were casting off. This secures the loop.
