To Make Up

Draw light pencil marks on each polystyrene ball to indicate where the four knitted pieces should go. Pin each panel into place, matching as close as you can to the pencilled lines. Slip-stitch them together with the same yarn used for the pieces. Leave a long length of yarn on the last seam, and use it to make a loop to hang the bauble. You can now add your embellishments.

Knitted Square Decorations

(make six: two each in pink, blue and cream yarn)
Using 4 ply yarn and 2.75mm needles, make a
slipknot on your needle
? Next row: inc once into the st (two sts)
? Next row: p
? Next row: inc into both stitches once (four sts)
? Next row: p
? Inc into first and last sts (six sts)
? Next row: p
? Rep the last two rows until there are ten sts on the needles
? Next row: p
? Dec one st at each end on every k row until two sts remain
? Next row: p2tog, fasten off last st

To Make Up

Stitch a pastel button to each square of a contrasting colour. Sew the squares to the ball with contrasting wool. Push a gold star stud in between each of the squares.

Tension Tip
No tension guide has been given for this pattern because of the small size of the items. However, it is easy to adapt the pattern to use whatever yarn you have to hand by making a template from your polystyrene blank.

Find the exact top and bottom of the sphere (insert a pin anywhere in the bauble and then turn it over to locate the opposite point) and then divide it in two by passing a length of yarn all the way around the bauble through the top and bottom points and drawing along this line. Repeat this method to divide the sphere into four equal panels, and use one to create and cut out a template.

Using the basic pattern and matching the amount of increases, decreases and the length to your template as you knit you can create your own customised version of this great festive idea.
