What you need to know

Lucinda Ganderton’s comfy cushion cover will teach you how to work garter stitch.

Lined with soft velvet and featuring traditional buttoning, this easy home knit has become a fast favourite at LKT HQ. It’s worked in garter stitch throughout and the only extra stitches you need to know are the ‘make one’ increase and how to knit two stitches together. We’ll talk you through how to pick up the stitches for the borders in this downloadable PDF pattern.

Top knit tip

To pick up and knit a stitch from a cast-off edge, insert your right needle through the centre of the stitch at the far right-hand side. Wrap the yarn around the needle and pull the loop through, leaving it on the needle. Continue across the row. When picking up along the side edges of your work, insert your needle between the first and second stitches. Knitted stitches are shorter than they are wide, so you will need to pick up a stitch on every other row so you don’t distort the garter stitch fabric. For stocking stitch, this would be three stitches, every four rows.
