What you need to know

Master sock knitting techniques with Nicola Valiji’s simple trainer sock project.

We're big fans of socks here at Let's Knit Together. They're the perfect year-round project, but short styles like these trainer socks are ideal for the warmer weather. Nicola Valiji's colourful footwear project won't take long to make and is a great opportunity to get to grips with sock knitting techniques. The length can easily be adjusted to fit, just work the foot without shaping until it reaches the base of your big toe, then work the 'shape toe' section.

What do I need?

Yarn: Scheepjes River Washed, shades 944 Nile, two 50g balls, 942 Steenbras, one 50g ball
Needles: 2.25mm straight, 2.25mm double-pointed, set of five
Tapestry needle
Stitch holder
Stitch markers

Sizing

To fit: average size ladies’ foot

Top knit tip

Double-pointed needles are ideal for sock knitting. Distribute your stitches over three or four needles, then use a spare needle to knit with. Hold this spare needle in your right hand and knit the stitches from the first dpn. When you've finished, move onto the next needle to your left and use your new empty dpn as the right-hand needle. Use a stitch marker to indicate the beginning of your round.
