If you're a little uncertain about knitting in the round, a baby hat is a great place to start because they are not too big and if you go wrong they are easier to fix. You don't have to do too many stitches and you work from the bottom up. Once you get past your 1x1 rib, you'll be working in stocking stitch and as your reach the crown you do simple decreases.
