Feel every bit the princess in these fantastic ruby slippers

Karen, Luise Roberts' superb 'ruby slipper' socks, designed exclusively for Let's Knit magazine, are perfect for making you feel really dreamy! This fun design, worked with two straight needles, is an excellent way to develop your colourwork skills and create a really fantastic finished knit. With so many experienced knitters calling out for more challenging projects, this design is more involved to build your skills. To make it more manageable we have broken it down in to two parts, so you don't feel daunted! Get stuck in with Part One this month and complete your socks with Part Two in next month's issue.

    Special stitches
Wrap 1 and lift 1 are the stitches used to turn the heel of your sock by creating short row shaping. Here’s how you work them: Wrap 1: to create this stitch, slip the next stitch to be worked onto the right hand needle without working it, bring the yarn from the back to the front of the work (or from the front to the back if you are working a purl row). Slip the unworked stitch back onto the left needle and turn your work. Ensure the yarn is now in the correct position - either to the front or back, depending on whether you are knitting or purling and continue. The unworked stitch will now have a horizontal piece of yarn running around it - i.e that stitch is ‘wrapped’ in yarn. Lift 1: (worked on a wrapped st). Insert the right needle under the yarn wrap then into the stitch on the left needle and knit or purl the yarn wrap and the stitch together.
