What you need to know

Susie Johns’ knitted sleeping bag pattern for baby is a great option for advanced beginners.

This sleep sack project fits around baby’s arms, shoulders and neck but still allows plenty of room for a wriggle! Knitted in one size to fit babies from around six weeks to six months, this sleeping bag design features buttons on either side of the front yoke, making it easy to slip on and off without pulling it over your little one’s head. Follow the unisex colour scheme suggested here, or take the opportunity to use up some oddments of yarn from your stash and knit stripes in your own choice of shades.

What do I need?

Yarn: Rico Essentials Soft Merino Aran, shades 60 Natural, four 50g balls, 71 Violet, 28 Jeans, 96 Silver Grey, 94 Medium Grey, one 50g ball of each
Needles: 4.5mm circular, 3.75mm straight
Buttons: eight
Stitch holders
Tapestry needle

Age (mths): 1-6

Top knit tips

The main part of this project is knitted in the round on a circular needle. When it comes to the yoke and sleeves, use the same circular needle to knit back and forth in rows, or swap to a pair of 4.5mm needles.

This design features a handy drawstring around the bottom, allowing you to tighten it up for a more snug sleep, or keep it loose if your little one likes a bit of a kick!
