Valentine’s Day Gifts: 10 Gift Ideas for Knitters to Give to Loved Ones

Who says Valentine’s has to be for romantic partners? Celebrate your love for your friends and family too with our round-up of gift ideas any knitter could whip up

Valentine’s Day (and Galentines!) is just around the corner, so it’s time to get out your needles so you can make something for that special someone in your life. Whether you want to treat a partner, best friend or family member to a thoughtful handmade gift or experience, we’ve got something for everyone on our list, so go on – get inspired and spread the love!

Who should I knit gifts for this Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s is traditionally a day for celebrating romantic love, but in recent years – especially with the emergence of ‘Galentine’s Day’ – it’s evolved to include all kinds of love, be that platonic, romantic, or even self-love. And where there’s love, there’s usually gift-giving, since it’s one of the oldest ways we know of to show we care. So here is a selection of knitted gift ideas for all the loves of your life, romantic or otherwise!

Hearts, Hearts, Hearts!

There’s nothing more quintessentially symbolic of love than the humble heart… and they take no time at all to knit! Perfect for gifting to your other half, or anyone who has a little piece of you heart, these easy patterns are great for last-minute gifts, or for if you have a lot of people in your life deserving of one!

Easy Heart Bunting

If you’re having a romantic night in with your significant other, why not set the mood with this super easy knitted heart bunting? Pop some up in your living room to spread the love in your own home!

Heart-shaped Handwarmers

Perfect for a loved one who you don’t see as often as you’d like; if you can’t hold their hands to keep them warm, why not send them a heart-shaped handwarmer full of your love, to use instead?

Rustic Yarn Hearts

Swamped with yarn scraps that you can’t knit with? Don’t bin them! Corinne Brad from the Crafts Channel has a quick and easy way to use up the ends of yarn to make some adorable rustic yarn hearts. They’re a real stash-buster!

I’m over hearts… what else could I give for Valentine’s?

While hearts are super quick and easy, you may well have knitted millions by now. If you’re all hearted-out and are looking for something new to treat your favourite people with, have no fear, because we’re brimming with ideas…

That knitted top they begged you for

If your friends are anything like ours, they’ve probably asked you a million times to make them some sort of garment or accessory… Well, why not make this Valentine’s their lucky day? They’ll be ever so grateful for that jumper they nagged you for, or, why not surprise them with something else? This beautiful shawl for example will be like a great big knitted hug from you – and it’ll look great too!

Take them out to a knitting café

We just love these little places, and there are more and more of them about these days. The Yarn Cake, Glasgow’s award-winning knitting café, is a great example, serving delicious tea, coffee and sweet treats alongside equally delicious yarn! Not only will you and your Valentine get to spend some quality time together and have a good old chinwag, but there will be cake for them and a room full of yarn for you… it’s a win-win!

A heartfelt wall hanging

If you like a spot of crochet as well as knitting, this beautiful fringed wall hanging could be the perfect way to show a special someone how much you love them… and how much you love yarn, of course. We fibre fiends can’t deny the special connection between ourselves and our yarn so it’s important that our loved ones understand the powerful relationship!

A knitting lesson from you

We’re sure you’ll agree with us when we say that one of the greatest gifts we were ever given was that first introduction to knitting. The skills we were taught by a friend or family member turned into a lifelong, irreplaceable hobby – so what better way to treat a loved one than passing on those special skills?

Take them with you on a knitting retreat

Now, we admit this one is a little cheeky… yes, we’re essentially saying use Valentine’s Day as an excuse to go on a knitting holiday and drag your friend/relative/partner along with you… Worth a try though, right? And hey, if they really dig their heels in, be your own Valentine and go alone – you’ll meet plenty of likeminded knitters there to befriend! The Knitting Hotel is a great place to start looking for your perfect getaway.

‘Sole Mates’ Socks

You can’t go wrong with a pair of socks, especially some hand-knitted ones. And we just love these funny socks from Hobbycraft, with the words ‘Sole Mates’ worked into the pattern. Who wouldn’t have a giggle at a pair of these?!

And for yourself…

You’ve got to show yourself a little self-love on Valentine’s too, but what’s the best way to a knitter’s heart? We think it’s safe to say that this one’s a no-brainer… duh, yarn of course! And lots of it. Treat yourself to some lovely new skeins from your local yarn shop, which you can find here by typing in ‘Yarn Shop’ and your location!
