The buttonholes are worked after you have finished knitting, using a method they call ‘widening the stitches’. To do this, pull up the horizontal ‘ladder rung’ in the middle of a stitch and sew it the stitch above. Then pull down on the ‘ladder rung’ below the first one, and stitch it neatly to the stitch below.
