What you need to know
Say hello to Val Pierce's easy cactus toy project, topped with a crocheted sombrero!
We're always looking to bring you something different here at LKT and Val Pierce is a master when it comes to fun and quirky toys. This is Donald, a not-so prickly cactus character, who is staying sun safe with his colourful hat. He's really easy to knit and the spikes are made from mini tassels. The sombrero is crocheted, but you can learn the basic stitches using the videos available on Let's Knit Together.

Top knit tip
When stuffing your toys, you want a firm filling but don’t use so much that the stitches start to stretch and you see the stuffing through the fabric. Donald is a nice smooth oval shape. To avoid a lumpy finish, use small amounts of stuffing and tease it out so it doesn’t clump. Sew the seams as you go, adding and removing stuffing as required.
