What you need to know

Download and knit Val Pierce's quick and simple pony knitting pattern.

Just look at that smile and tasselly tail! This knitted pony project reminds us of vintage toys, but is soft and squidgable enough for modern playtimes. He's knitted in chunky and aran yarns so will grow really quickly - just as well considering all the requests you are going to get! Remember, if you are giving this pony toy to a small child, you will need to embroider the eyes instead of using buttons.

What do I need?

Yarn: Bergere de France Cyclone, shade 34161 Astro Lagon, two 50g balls, Cream aran-weight, 30g, Red DK, small amount, Black DK, oddment
Needles: 5.5mm
Crochet hook: 3.75mm
Buttons: 18mm, white, two; 10mm, black, two
Safety toy stuffing

Sizing

Feet to ears: 32cm
Nose to tail: 26.5cm

Top knit tips

If you’re not confident when it comes to crochet, just use 4mm knitting needles to cast on the following number of stitches for each piece of the bridle and reins. Once you have cast on for each piece, knit two rows, then cast off.

Bridle noseband: 32 sts
Bridle headband: 38 sts
Bridle back and sides: 60 sts
Reins: 90 sts

The yarn is quite soft and may break if you pull it too hard. You may find it easier to work with short lengths when sewing up the pieces.
