What you need to know

Make a set of interactive granny squares in part one of our sensory playmat crochet-along.

Welcome to a brand new crochet-along; everyone is invited to enjoy this exclusive series designed for those who love crafting for little ones. Over the next four weeks, you'll be making a variety of granny squares featuring different textures and playful elements. You'll begin with bobbles, a bow and a cluster of buttons for a child to enjoy, before all squares are joined together to form a playmat that can be passed down for generations. Careful attention is needed to check tension so the playmat keeps a neat shape as it grows — if a square measures larger than 11.5cm the work is too loose and a smaller hook should be used, while a smaller square means a larger hook is needed.

Sizing

Squares: 12cm square (part one: 11.5cm squares)
Finished playmat: 58cm x 68cm

What you need

DK yarn, assorted shades (example uses four shades of pink, red, orange, yellow, green, lime, mint, turquoise, blue ombre, glittery blue, navy blue, plum, lilac, mauve, cream, grey)
Crochet hook: 5mm
