What you need to know

Celebrate the winter season by knitting Val Pierce's polar bear toy pattern.

With snow-white fur and big, friendly paws, our polar bear project will make a fantastic playmate for children! If you finish the polar bear in time for Christmas, why not knit a little Santa hat to get him ready for the big day? The bear's features are embroidered to make it safe for young children, but if you are making the bear for a really tiny person, then omit the scarf or stitch it firmly around his neck.

Yarn: Rico Fashion Fur, shade 001 Cream, two 50g balls, Peter Pan DK, shade 301, Wendy Merino Chunky, shade 2475, one 50g ball of each, oddments of dark grey yarn
Needles: 5.5mm, 4mm

Height when sitting: 32cm

Top knit tips

Sewing up with this type of yarn needs care and the use of a large-eyed, blunt-ended tapestry needle. It also helps to use short lengths of yarn at a time. As you are sewing together, remember that seams will run down the back of the Head and Body, and the undersides of the Arms and Legs. Remain patient when you are stuffing, particularly around the face, as it may take some time to look perfect.
