Get into the boho spirit with these fantastic flowery headbands and necklaces
These gorgeous embellished accessories from Chrissie Day are bound to bring out the flower child in you – perfect for jazzing up an outfit, they're quick to knit and fun to make. This is a great project to do with friends, at your knitting club or even in the pub, and being made from soft cotton yarn they're light, cool and comfortable to wear.
Yarn: Rowan Handknit DK Cotton, one 50g ball (or a mixture of contrasting shades)
Needles: 3mm, 4mm, 5mm
SAN FRANCISCO
MOSS STITCH HEAD BAND (MAKE TWO)
Leaving a long tail of yarn and using 3mm needles, cast on 45 sts
❑ Row 1: k1, (p1, k1) rep to end
❑ Row 2: k1, (p1, k1) rep to end These two rows form moss stitch
❑ Rep the above two rows another six times
❑ Cast off
TWIST FLOWER
Using 3mm needles cast on 42 sts tightly
❑ Rows 1 and 2: knit
❑ Row 3: k6, twist your left hand needle (and the sts on it) towards you in a 360 degree circle, k6. Rep to end of row
❑ Rows 4 and 5: knit
❑ Row 6: k2tog, rep to end (21 sts)
❑ Row 7: k2tog, rep to last st, k1 (11 sts)
❑ Row 8: k2tog, rep to last st, k1 (six sts)
❑ Break off yarn (leaving a long tail to stitch button on with) and run yarn end back through these six sts
SHOUT FLOWER
Using 5mm needles cast on 66 sts tightly
❑ Rows 1 – 4: knit
❑ Row 5: k6, twist your left hand needle (and the sts on it) towards you in a 360 degree circle, k6. Rep to end of row
❑ Row 6: knit
❑ Row 7: p2tog, rep to end (33 sts)
❑ Row 8: knit
❑ Row 9: p2tog, rep to last st, p1 (17 sts)
❑ Break off yarn (leaving a long tail to stitch button on with) and run yarn end back through these 17 sts
WOODSTOCK FLOWER
Using 3mm needles cast on 54 sts
❑ Rows 1 – 4: knit
❑ Row 5: k6, twist your left hand needle (and the sts on it) towards you in a 360 degree circle, k6. Rep to end of row
❑ Row 6: purl
❑ Row 7: k2tog, rep to end (27 sts)
❑ Row 8: p2tog, rep to last st, p1 (14 sts)
❑ Row 9: k2tog, rep to end (seven sts)
❑ Break off yarn (leaving a long tail to stitch button on with) and run yarn end back through these seven sts
BETHEL FLOWER
Using 5mm needles cast on 42 sts
❑ Rows 1 – 5: knit
❑ Row 6: p6, twist your left hand needle (and the sts on it) towards you in a 360 degree cirlce, p6. Rep to end of row
❑ Row 7: knit
❑ Row 8: p2tog, rep to end (21 sts)
❑ Row 9: knit
❑ Row 10: p2tog, rep to last st, p1 (11 sts)
❑ Break off yarn (leaving a long tail to stitch button on with) and run yarn end back through these eleven sts
DYLAN FLOWER
Using 4mm needles cast on 55 sts
❑ Rows 1 – 4: knit
❑ Row 5: k5, twist your left hand needle (and thests on it) towards you in a 360 degree cirlce, k5. Rep to end of row
❑ Row 6: purl
❑ Row 7: k2tog, rep to last st, k1 (28 sts)
❑ Row 8: p2tog, rep to last st, p1 (14 sts)
❑ Row 9: k2tog, rep to end (seven sts)
❑ Break off yarn (leaving a long tail to stitch button on with) and run yarn end back through these seven sts
ALL FLOWERS
❑ On completion of knitting your flowers, curl the work around into a blossom shape (see picture for reference) and stitch a button into the centre of each, using the long tail of yarn left from gathering your last row of sts together
❑ Arrange your flowers into the shape you’d like your finished piece to take. Take the moss stitch bands that you previously worked on, and add one to either side of your flowers. Stitch together, using spare yarn
