A toasty pair of fingerless mitts are just the ticket for keeping out the chills this October. Knitted on straight needles, they're ideal for those of you who find dpns tricky to manage and the thumb hole is created by leaving stitches on holders then working the sections separately. Made in chunky Rowan Cocoon, the armwarmers knit up quickly and are super soft with a slightly fuzzy finish, while the bright red shade is sure to get them noticed. The buttons are fastened using stitches so there's no need to worry about making lots of buttonholes, and combined with the cable patterns, the completed look is one of vibrant colour and interesting texture.

Cast off

Sew first two rows of thumb together to make tube shape. Sew thumb into hole in glove with cast off edge and shaped sides sewn to glove and thumb seam facing up. Weave in any loose ends. Down one side of each glove stitch seven buttons and use the sts on the other side as buttonholes
