Dory
Take your Fair Isle skills to the next level with Dory, Luise Roberts' impressive magic-eye picture socks

After our fabulous introduction to Fair Isle in our last issue, Luise Roberts has come up with another sensational design to help you develop your growing colourwork skills. This time we look at Fair Isle in the round and these brilliant socks are a great example of what can be achieved. The pattern is made up of two contrasting yarns and the shapes look like scales. The scales have also been made to resemble fish as a great finishing touch. If you can't see them to begin with, just stand back and admire the design then, just like a magic eye picture, lots of little fish will appear before you!

About the yarn
Colinette Jitterbug 4ply is a gorgeous machine washable yarn that is made from 100% merino wool and is available in an astounding 118 colourways! These range from solid shades to subtle variegated tones and bold multi-coloured skeins. Try opting for blues and greens for a more oceanic feel.

Need an alternative?
Regia 4ply Solid Colours is a blend of 75% wool and 25% polymide although two balls will be needed if you are substituting the stated yarn. Shade 2041 (yellow) would work well for these socks. Regia Hand Dye Effect 4ply is a great alternative for the background shade and comprises 70% wool, 25% polymide and five percent acrylic. Try shade 6550 (Red) to replicate the colours used in Dory.

Knit Wise

Start right
LK Designer Luise Roberts shares her handy method for casting on with double-pointed needles:

Step 1: Cast on
Cast on the required number of stitches onto one needle.

Step 2: Slip stitches
Slip the first half of the stitches onto a second needle.

Step 3: Fold in half
Taking care not to twist the cast on edge, fold in half and hold the needle parallel so the last cast on stitch is on the back needle with the yarn coming up from the last stitch.

Step 4: Start knitting
Using a third needle knit the number of stitches required on the first needle of the round off the front needle. Distribute the stitches evenly across four needles then continue knitting with a fifth needle.
