These short socks exclusively designed for Let's Knit by Luise Roberts are a joy to knit and even better to wear. Yarn: Cherry Tree Hill, Supersock Solids, shade pink, one 100g skein
Needles: 2.5mm, five double pointed needles

CARYS PATTERN, MAKE TWO
Cuff
Using the long tail cast on method, loosely cast on 62sts
❑ Rearrange the stitches on the needles as folls: Needle 1: 15sts (first stitches cast on); Needle 2: 15sts; Needle 3: 16sts; Needle 4: 16sts
❑ Work foll the cuff chart (see page 24) starting with round 1 and ending with round 30
Heel flap
Prepare for the heel flap as foll:
❑ Needle 1: k3, bring yarn to the front between the needles, sl the next st purlwise from Needle 1 and turn
❑ Slip the stitches from Needle 4 and 12sts from Needle 3 onto the needle with the four sts worked from Needle 1. 32sts
❑ Slip the remaining sts on Needle 3 onto Needle 2 Work foll the heel chart noting that it starts with a wrong side row from the left
Turning the heel
❑ Row 33: k1, p16, p2tog, p1. Turn
❑ Row 34: sl1 purlwise, k3, ssk, k1. Turn
❑ Row 35: sl1 purlwise, p to one st before the gap in the stitches, p2tog, p1. Turn
❑ Row 36: sl1 purlwise, k to one st before the gap in the stitches, ssk, k1. Turn
❑ Rep the last two rows, increasing the number of stitches worked before the decrease st by one on each row until all the stitches have been worked ending with a RS row. 18sts
Gusset
Using a spare needle pick up 16sts down the left side of the heel working through both of the loops for each chain edge st, then pick up one st at the base of the heel and one st under the first stitch of the instep
❑ With a new needle, knit across the instep stitches that form the lace pattern on top of the foot on Needle 2 and then 3
❑ With a new needle, pick up one st under the first stitch of the instep and 1st at the base of the heel before the chain edge. Pick up 16sts up the right side of the heel, working through both of the loops for each chain edge st
❑ With the same needle that picked up the sts up the right of the heel, k9 from the needle holding the stitches from the turned heel Rearrange the stitches on the needles as follows:
❑ Needle 1: holds nine sts from the left side of the turned heel and 13sts picked up along the edge of the left of the heel. 22 sts. Needle 2: holds five sts picked up along the edge of the left of the heel and 11sts of the instep lace pattern. 16sts Needle 3: 19 sts of the instep lace pattern and holds five sts picked up along the edge of the right of the heel. 24 sts. Needle 4: holds 13 sts picked up along the edge of the right of the heel nine sts from the left side of the turned heel. 22 sts
❑ The next round eliminates the extra sts picked up at the base of the heel and instep and tightens the join between the two sections. The two double decreases used to achieve this are emboldened
❑ Note: do not follow established pattern but the rnd 2 instructions that follow.
❑ Rnd 2: Needle 1, k to the end of the needle; Needle 2, ssk, yfwd, k3tog, yfwd twice, ssk, yfwd, k2tog, k2, yfwd, ssk, k2tog, yfwd, k2; Needle 3, ssk, yfwd, k2tog, yfwd twice, ssk, yfwd, k2tog, k2, yfwd, ssk, k2tog, yfwd, k2, ssk, yfwd, k2tog, yfwd twice, sl three sts individually knitwise and k through the back of all three as in ssk, yfwd, k2tog; Needle 4, k to the end of the needle
❑ Rnd 3: Needle 1, k to the last three sts, k2tog, k1; Needle 2 and 3, work round 3 of the instep chart; Needle 4, k1, ssk, k to the end of the needle
❑ Rnd 4: Needle 1, k to the end of the needle; Needle 2 and 3, work the next round of the instep chart; Needle 4, k to the end of the needle
❑ Rnd 5: Needle 1, k to the last three sts, k2tog, k1; Needle 2 and 3, follow the next round of the instep chart; Needle 4, k1, ssk, k to the end of the needle
❑ Rep the last two rounds until 64 sts rem and there are 12 sts only on Needles 1 and 4, rep the first ten rnds of the chart for Needles 2 and 3
Foot
❑ Needles 1 and 4, k to the end of the needle; on Needles 2 and 3, cont to work from the chart until a total of four reps of chart rnds 1–10 have been completed
❑ Then: Needles 1 and 4, k to the end of the needle; on Needles 2 and 3, cont to work from the chart starting with rnd 41 of the instep chart, until rnd 69 has been completed
❑ Rearrange the stitches on the needles as follows: Needle 1: holds 12sts plus 4sts from needle 2.16sts. Needle 2: holds 12sts. Needle 3: holds 20sts transferring four sts to Needle 4. 20sts. Needle 4: holds rem 16sts. 16sts Cont foll the instep chart starting with round 70 as follows:
❑ Rnd 70: Needle 1, k to the end of the needle; Needles 2 and 3, work rnd 70 of the chart; Needle 4, k2, p to the end of the needle
❑ Rnd 71: needle 1, p to the last 2sts, k2; Needles 2 and 3, work next rnd of the chart; Needle 4, k2, p to the end of the needle
❑ Rep the last rnd until rnd 80 of the chart has been completed
The foot length can be adjusted by either not working rnds 60–69 and replacing with a few rnds of knit before cont to work from the chart starting with rnd 70 or adding rnds of knit after rnd 69 before cont to work from the chart starting with rnd 70.
The toe shaping is 20 rnds and about a fifth of the total heel to toe tip length in the patt as written
Toe
Rearrange the stitches on the needles as follows:
Needle 1: holds 16sts. Needle 2: holds 12sts plus four sts from Needle 3. 16sts. Needle 3: holds 16sts. Needle 4: holds rem 16sts
❑ Rnd 81: needle 1, p to the last three sts, k2tog, k1; Needle 2, k1, ssk, p to the end of the needle; Needle 3, p to the last three sts, k2tog, k1; Needle 4, k1, ssk, p to the end of the needle
❑ Rnd 82: needle 1, p to the last two sts, k2; Needle 2, k2, p to the end of the needle; Needle 3, p to the last two sts, k2; Needle 4, k2, p to the end of the needle
❑ Rep the last two rounds until 32sts rem
❑ Next rnd: Needle 1, k to the last three sts, k2tog, k1; Needle 2, k1, ssk, k to the end of the needle; Needle 3, k to the last three sts, k2tog, k1; Needle 4, k1, ssk, k to the end of the needle
❑ Rep the last round until16sts rem
❑ Needle 1; k to the end of the needle
❑ Cut yarn 40cm from the needle
To make up
Use Kitchener stitch to graft the toe stitches together. Weave in loose ends and block using the ball band as a guide
