What you need to know

Val Pierce's penguin toy pattern is suitable for beginner knitters. Hoorah!

Travis the penguin is soft, plump and cuddly – the perfect Christmas playmate for your little ones. He's really easy to knit too. The body and mask are worked in stocking stitch, while the wings, feet and beak are knitted in garter stitch. The shaping is nice and simple and we've given stitch counts throughout to help you keep on track. Finish the design with a jolly festive hat and a bright, stripy scarf.

What do I need?

Yarn: Robin DK, shade 40 White, shade 44 Black, one 100g ball of each, Peter Pan DK, shade 354 Veridian, shade 912 Rocket Red, shade 380 Primrose Yellow, one 50g ball of each
Needles: 4mm
Safety toy stuffing

Sizing

24.5cm tall (with hat lying flat)

Top knit tips

To avoid advanced colourwork and keep this project well-suited to beginners, the mask is knitted separately and sewn on during the making up stage.

To make the bobble on the tip of Travis's Christmas hat, cut two circles of card 4cm in diameter, with a hole in the centre of each. Cut lengths of yarn A, hold the discs together and wrap the yarn around the outer ring, until the centre hole is completely filled. Insert scissors between the card rings and snip through the wrapped yarn. Tie a longer length of yarn around the middle and pull tightly to secure the strands. Remove the card and trim any loose ends.
