What you need to know

Learn how to knit with eyelash yarn while making Val Pierce's hedgehog toy pattern for Christmas.

This woodland pattern has become a fast favourite here at LKT HQ, He uses eyelash yarn to great effect and is super soft and cuddly. Use a row counter and stitch markers to help you keep track of your shaping when using the furry yarn. The lantern our hedgehog is holding is the final festive touch!

Top knit tips

The lead-work on the lantern is embroidered over the top of your knitting using chain stitch. To do this, thread your yarn on to a tapestry needle and bring it through the knitted piece to the front of the work. Reinsert your needle through the fabric near the entry point, leaving a small loop on the right side of the work. Now, bring the needle back out a few millimetres along, coming up inside the loop of yarn. Repeat this until all the lead detail is complete. On your last stitch, sew a small straight stitch to secure the final loop.

If you wish to give the hedgehog to a young child, then omit the lantern because it has a wire support.
