Jazz Knitting Pattern

Jazz

Designer: Luise Roberts

Get decorative with Jazz, this novel necklace by Luise Roberts

The great joy of crafting is creating something special that you won't see anywhere else, and this knitted necklace from Luise Roberts is one of a kind. Made in super-bright, selfstriping yarn, it is worked in one piece on double-pointed needles. It's a brilliantly varied project for those who like a change – you'll be required to wrap and thread, as well as work some unusual shapings. All-in-all this geometric puzzle of a project will keep you inspired from start to finish.

JAZZ PATTERN

NOTE: this project begins at the Necklace section but you will need to refer back to the Basic cube pattern as instructed

BASIC CUBE PATTERN

NOTE: this cube is worked from corner to opposite corner in three stages. During stage one, three faces are created by increasing at eitheredge of the face; at stage two three more faces are started and a decrease is worked on either edge of the first three faces; at stage three a decrease is worked on either edge of the three faces started in stage two

STAGE ONE

Working from either existing sts or using the thumb method, loosely cast on six sts. Arrange the sts evenly overthree needles, making sure the sts are not twisted. Join the round, placing a marker at the start of the rnd on N1

NOTE: the last needle of the round is N3. Two sts on each needle
? Rnd 1: k
? Rnd 2: * k1, double-M1, k1, rep from * on each needle. Four sts on each needle
? Rnd 3: * k1, p2, k1, rep from * on each needle
? Rnd 4: * k1, (kfb) twice, k1, rep from * on each needle. Six sts on each needle
? Rnd 5: * k1, p until one st rem on LH needle, k1, rep from * on each needle
? Rnd 6: * k1, kfb, k until two sts rem on LH needle, kfb, k1, rep from * on each needle. Eight sts on each needle
? Rep the last two rnds until the distance from the cast-on sts along the ridge of k sts at the end of the needles measures 2.5cm (or the length of the edge knitted is equal to the width of the cube you wish to knit) Rep Rnd 5 one more time

STAGE TWO

? Next rnd: * k1, ssk, k until three sts rem on LH needle, k2tog, k1, double-M1, rep from * on each needle
NOTE: the number of sts on each needle rem the same as that on the last rnd of Stage one
? Next rnd: * k1, p until three sts rem on LH needle, k1, place marker, p2, rep from * on each needle
? Next rnd: * k1, ssk, k until three sts rem before stitch marker, k2tog, k1, slip st marker, (kfb) twice, rep from * on each needle
? Next rnd: * k1, p until one st rem before stitch marker, k1, slip marker, p4, rep from * on each needle
? Next rnd: * k1, ssk, k until three sts rem before stitch marker, k2tog, k1, slip st marker, kfb, k until one st rem on LH needle, kfb, rep from * on each needle
? Next rnd: * k1, p until one st rem before stitch marker, k1, slip marker, p to the end of the needle, rep from * on each needle
? Rep the last two rnds until there are two p sts before the marker on each needle
? Next rnd: * ssk, k2tog, remove marker, kfb, k until one st rem on LH needle, kfb, rep from * on each needle
NOTE: the following moves the start of the rnd one st to the left
? Next rnd: k2, p to the end of the needle, k1 from the next needle, * k1, p to the end of the needle, k1 from the next needle, rep from * to end

STAGE THREE

? Next rnd: * k1, ssk, k until three sts rem on LH needle, k2tog, k1, rep from * on each needle
? Next rnd: * k1, p until one st rem on LH needle, k1, rep from * on each needle
? Rep the last two rnds until there are two purl sts on each needle
? Next rnd: * ssk, k2tog, rep from * on each needle

That’s a wrap
Neatly wrapping the yarn to cover the entire surface of the brass ring is key to the clean, professional finish. It’s tempting to do the wrapping first before threading the ring onto the yarn but this does make it slightly harder to pass the knitting needle through holding the stitches, so we recommend doing it at the end.

Special abbreviations
Double-M1: k into the front and back of the bar between the sts

Necklace: 45cm plus 11cm drop
