Knitting Patterns For Beginners
The free patterns provided on our website were all originally featured in Let’s Knit magazine, and give you a taste of the kind of patterns you'll find in the magazine, along with gorgeous garments for all the family. Let's Knit magazine features knitting patterns for all skill levels and there is always something for beginners to try, helped along by our step-by-step tutorials and illustrations. Beginners will also find our extensive collection of video tutorials extremely helpful, as it can often be easier to follow knitting and crochet techniques in action. However, once you've learnt the basics our practical pages at the back of the magazine are always there for reference. You'll be surprised at how quickly you can progress from trying the simplest design to attempting cables, bobbles, colourwork and even lace.
In addition to our collection of free patterns you'll also find regular knitting patterns to download which have been provided by some of our favourite sponsors, accompanied by helpful information on yarn stockists and prices.
Crochet Patterns
As well as hundreds of knitting patterns we also have many crochet patterns in our collection. Free on our website you'll find crochet patterns for blankets, boleros, bags, accessories, homewares and even jewellery. Most are suitable for crochet beginners and as with the knitting patterns you'll find illustrated techniques for how to do the basic crochet stitches on our website. Like knitting, crochet is a craft where once you know the simplest of the basics, everything else just follows on from there, as all crochet stitches are a variation on the same basic stitch.
In order to successfully follow a knitting pattern it's worth remembering a number of simple rules. Firstly, always read the pattern through from start to finish before you begin and make sure you understand everything. This will help prevent any nasty surprises such as realising too late that you should have been decreasing for the neck of a garment at the same time as decreasing for the armhole. Secondly, always knit a tension square, as knitting too loose or too tight can make a huge difference to the measurements of the finished item. Thirdly, don't try and do everything in your head; keep a notebook and pencil to hand so that you can easily keep tabs on things like alterations to your stitch pattern. You'll be glad you did!
