Swiss Darning

The skull motif on our Nightshade (p68) cushion can be worked using intarsia colourwork or embroidered over the top using Swiss darning, also known as duplicate stitch

Step 1Step 1: Thread a tapestry needle with yarn and insert it through the fabric from back to front, bringing it out at the bottom of the 'v' of the required stitch. Insert the needle through the two loops at the base of the stitch above, then take it back through the entry point. This should create the effect of a knitted stitch.
