What you need to know

Master modular knitting with Wendy Freebourne’s festival poncho knitting pattern featuring mitred squares

Ponchos are just the thing to pack when you hit the road this summer; they fold up small and are brilliant for slipping over your shoulders to beat the chill in the cooler evenings. This unique garment is a brilliant pattern to develop your modular knitting skills too as you will be picking up and knitting stitches to work the poncho in just two pieces. The pattern has instructions for the different shaped panels and shows you how to join them as you go.

What do I need?

Yarn: Aran (A) Pink Variegated, (B) Blue Variegated, three 100g balls of each
Needles: 5.5mm, (5.5mm double-pointed or long needles optional)
Crochet hook (for fringe)
Tapestry needle

62cm (neck to point)
77cm (widest part)

Special abbreviation

Sl2 tog: insert right hand needle knitwise into second and first sts on left hand needle and sl both together. Pass these two sts over next k st.

Top knit tip

To prevent holes, if loops at corners are very loose, take loop onto lh needle and k into back of loop. For this yarn, it is better to cast on fairly tightly.
